Ten Songs Podcast #13

Merry Christmas, ya mugs! I know this shows a bit earlier than usual, but I’m off work because Stown looks like a skating rink/bus disaster zone/non-win no-fee lawyers wet dream so I figured I’d take advantage of the unexpected free time.

Anyhow, this show should really be called “Fourteen Songs” because as well as the usual mix of punk and hardcore, there’s the first of what I hope will become a regular feature. Rich Smith, from Gordon Gano’s Army, was kind enough to record a studio set from the Southampton noisy, Jesus Lizard-style hardcore band The Good Wife for me. You can hear the four tracks from that session for the first time ever on this show. Thanks to Rich and the Good Wife for making this happen – I’m totally stoked on how it came out. - Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1. Eddy Current Suppression Ring – Get Up Morning (From the “S/T” CD on
Goner Records)

2. Wasted Time – And So It Goes (From the “No Shore” 7” on
Grave Mistake Records)
3. Brutal Knights – Bikini Diet (From the “Feast Of Shame” CD on
Deranged Records)
4. Count Me Out – Against The World (From the “Permanent” CD on
Indecision Records)
5. Government Warning – Executed (From the “Executed” 7” on
Grave Mistake Records and No Way Records)

6. Co-Co-Coma– You Better Beware (From the “Things Are Not Alright” CD on
Goner Records)
7. The Shaking Hands – Buried Treasure (From the “#1 Reason To Move To Gainesville” LP on
No Idea Records)
8. Royal Headache – Eloise (From their demo –
Royal Headache myspace)
9. Chinese Telephones – All Right (From the split 7“ with Dear Landlord on
Recess Records)

Good Wife, Live @ Planet Sounds
10. The Good Wife – Most Girls Are Potato
11. The Good Wife – Teeth & Tongue
12. The Good Wife – Vas Diaz
13. The Good Wife – An Unsuccessful Husband
On this recording, the Good Wife were – Dan (Drums), Nick, (Guitar), Tom (Guitar), Russ (Bass), Matt (Vocals), Clive (Vocals). The current Good Wife line up is Dan (Drums), Nick, (Guitar), Clive (Guitar), Russ (Bass), Emile (Vocals). They have a 7” on Superfi Records and you can find out more on their myspace page. This set was recorded by Rich Smith. Rich has a mobile studio (he doesn’t work for Planet Sounds), doesn’t charge much, does a great job and is an all-round good guy. You should totally drop him an email at rich_smith@live.co.uk if you’re on the south coast and want to record.

14. Radon – A Fist Full Of Potash (From the Four Way Split 7” on
Fast Crowd Records)

Notes:
1. This was put together on my family's PC using Audacity and a USB record player, some over played CDs and 7"s and a cheap Internet microphone. Plus this MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if there’s a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format.
2. I asked the bands (Royal Headache, Good Wife), the labels (Grave Mistake, Deranged, Indecision, No Idea, Fast Crowd) or Cam at Southern Lovin’ (Eddy Current, Co-Co-Coma) if it was OK to podcast their songs and they were cool with it. I think one of the great things about the Internet is that it’s really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers!
3. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it! Please? Thank you. And get in touch too if you dig it/hate it/have any tips. tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com or leave a comment. And if you think you might want to have a go at making your own podcast, heres a step by step guide to How I Made This Show.

How To Listen To The Show:
I've uploaded the podcast to bliptv. I'm a little confused by RSS feeds and all that bumph, but I think that they sort all this for me. This means that it should be pretty easy to subscribe to the podcast. As I understand it, you need to cut and paste this url into your podcast catcher - http://tensongspodcast.blip.tv/rss - or if you use itunes, hopefully you'll be able to do the same thing if you CLICK HERE.

Uploading to blip.tv also means that you can use the player below to stream the podcast and listen to it without downloading it. Plus if you RIGHT CLICK HERE and select "save target as" you should have the option of downloading the podcast and listening to it on the sly at work or something. Get in. (If you left click, it streams the audio too, but it jumps to another page and takes forever.)

Ten Songs Podcast #10

This is October’s podcast and the second of three shows focusing on punk and hardcore from my home town of Southampton. This is an entire show of old Southampton bands from between 2000–2007 – basically from about the millennium to when I went travelling. I started off with the idea that I could do a kind of overview that would include all the great bands from this period but there were too many songs and too many people that needed to be included. So even though Ten Songs #11 is going to feature another short set of old Southampton HC, I couldn’t include everyone and everything. Sorry, it’s nothing personal. Anyhow, I think this has been my favourite show to record and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did digging out all the old CDs and putting it together. - Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1. Parade Of Enemies – South Coast Thrash Attack (From their self released demo)

2. No Substance – Not Just Surviving (From the “Last Seven Songs” CDR on At The Library Records –
No Substance Myspace)
3. Intent – Socialisation (From “Dirty Half Dozen” CD on Milliepeed Records -
Intent Myspace)
4. Social Parasites – Society (From the self released self titled CDR –
Social Parasites Myspace)
5. Wreak Of Old 98 – My Friends Are My Heroes (From the self titled LP on
Opiate, Milliepeed Records, Superfi Records, SNCL and Weight Of Days)

6. Circus Act – You, The Suspect (From the “This Is Your Destination” CD on Milliepeed Records –

7. Haywire – Carnival of Chaos (Unreleased -
Haywire Myspace)
8. Disoma – Train Drivers Dream Of Becoming Pilots (Milliepeed Records)
9. Pilger – Employment As Water Torture (From the “Begging For A Silver Lining” CD on
Peter Bower Records – Pilger Myspace)

10. Russ Substance – Take A Fall (From the “Garden-Core!” CD-R on Milliepeeed and At The Library Records)

Ten Songs Podcast #5

This is May’s podcast and I’ve got another guest podcaster. This time Chris – who lives in Austria – is playing a set of Austrian hardcore. We put this together over email, which I think ended up working well. I really like the fact that we put this show together whilst sitting at PC's in different countries! Yay for the Internet. Ten Songs Podcast #4

So this is April's podcast, a few days early but there you go. This time I'm playing a set of songs from the Maximum Rocknroll compilation CD Public Safety (see www.maximumrocknroll.com), which I picked up a while ago. I thought it'd be fun to play some of my favourite songs from that as well as the usual mix of punk, garage, hardcore and folk. It's Sunday evening and I'm not feeling very wordy right now but I'm pretty stoked on how this episode came out. Let me know what you think. Woo. - Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1. Circus Act - This Life Is Moving Too Fast (From the "This Is Your Destination" CD on the defunct Milliepeed Records - order copies through the Circus Act Myspace)

Blah Blah Blah:
1. I still don’t know what I’m doing. Sorry. I even bought a book on podcasting. I hope that makes sense!
2. I either asked the bands (Circus Act, Mark Gunnery) or the record label who put out the record I was playing (Recess, Maximum Rocknroll, Dirtnap, Crypt) if it was OK to podcast their songs and they were cool with it. I think one of the great things about the Internet is that its really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers!
3. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it! Please? Thank you. And get in touch too if you dig it/hate it/have any tips. tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com

Ten Songs Podcast #3

So I got a new microphone and a spit guard and everything got really painless. Wow. This is March's podcast and I hope you like it. I thought it might be kinda fun to do something different this time around and get a guest podcaster in to play some stuff that probably hadn't really registered on my musical radar. So I got xHannahx - of Zine For the Ladies/South Coast Vegan Cooking zine etc - in to play a bunch of UK folk punk stuff. Let me know what you think! - Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1. Off With Their Heads - Theme Song (From the "Hospitals" MCD on Recess Records)

Guest Set:

2. PJ & Gabby - A Collection Of Thoughts (From the "Alarm Clocks Kill Dreams" CD on Cottage Records in the USA, Tiki Records and NC Records in Europe and available from them in the UK)
3. Kelly Kemp - Misanthrope (From the S/T CD on This Ones For The Crew Records)
4. El Morgan - Six Weeks (From the self released "6 Hours In Queens Park" CD)
5. Sam Russo - Your Parents Sins (From the self released EP "Darkened Doors")

6. Fucked Up - Colour Removal (From the "Epics In Minutes" CD on Deranged Records)
7. Uniform Choice - Screaming For Change (From the "Screaming For Change" CD on Wishing Well and available from Revhq)
8. School Jerks - Problems (From their self released demo tape)
9. Parade Of Enemies - Anti-youth Culture (From their self released demo tape)

10. Tranzmitors - Beating Up My Heart (From their S/T CD on Deranged Records)

The Usual Footnote Stuff:
1. I still don’t know what I’m doing. Sorry. I even bought a book on podcasting. This was put together on my family's PC using Audacity and a USB record player, some over played CDs and 7"s and a cheap Internet microphone. 3. If you dug the Parade of Enemies song, good luck finding a tape copy... I'm uploading the whole demo though in a few weeks so you'll be able to download and stream it then. Woo.

Ten Songs Podcast #2

Ok, here’s February's podcast. Its a bit early, but there you go. I think I'm going to aim for compiling about one a month until it becomes a chore. You should subscribe! This time out, I had a real nightmare with the microphone which goes to show that you get what you pay for and I should spend less on beer and 7"s and more on getting some kind of decent set up. I had to record each bit about 50 times to get it usable. Oh well. Enjoy, and let me know what you think! - Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1. The Bananas - There’s Blood On My Banana (From "Nautical Rock'n'Roll" CD on
Plan-It-X Records)2. The Gramercy Riffs - You Couldn't Fucking Write It (From their Demo - see www.myspace.com/gramercyriffspunk)
3. The First Step - Peace (From "What We Know" CD on
Rivalry Records)
4. Cloak/Dagger - Hollywood Hills (From "We Are..." CD on
Jade Tree Records)
5. Whole In The Head - The Boy Who Told Lies (From the split 7" with War All The Time on Crimescene Records)

6. Gordon Gano's Army - Get Up & Get Out (From "50 Hours" 7" on
AARBR Records)
7. Lemuria - Rough Draft (From "The First Collection" on
Yo Yo Records)
8. Foundation - No Smoke (From "Homecoming" 7" on
1-2-3-4 Go! Records)
9. Abe Froman - Mosquito Season (From the self titled CD on
Plan-It-X Records)

10. The Marked Men - Still Waiting (From "On The Outside" CD on
Dirtnap Records)

Some Points I Should Probably Make:
1. I still don’t know what I’m doing. Sorry. This was put together on my family's PC using Audacity and a USB record player, some over played CDs and 7"s and a super cheap microphone (I got it for £4). Plus this MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if there’s a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format. I hope that makes sense!
2. I either asked the bands (Gramercy Riffs, The First Step, Cloak/Dagger, Whole In The Head, Gordon Gano's Army, Lemuria, The Marked Men) or the record label who put out the record I was playing (Plan-It-X, 1-2-3-4-Go! Records) if it was ok to podcast their songs and they were cool with it. I think one of the great things about the Internet is that its really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers!
3. I couldn't find an active link for Crimescene Records, except their myspace page - which says they're closed. Sorry.
4. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it! Please? Thank you.

Ten Songs Podcast #1

Welcome to the first Ten Songs Podcast. I hope you dig it. The rough idea is to play a bunch of punk, hardcore, garage and folk songs in a radio-style format in the hope that I can maybe expose listeners to great tunes that they haven't heard before. Please let me know what you think! - Phil Chokeword

Track Listing:
1. This Is My Fist! - Voice From Occupationland (from "I Don't Want To Startle You But They're Going To Kill Most Of Us" 7" on Left Off The Dial Records)

2. The Shitty Limits - Here Are The Limits (from "Here Are The Limits" 7" on Static Shock Records)

3. Career Suicide - Rearranged (from "Anthology Vol Two" CD on Deranged records)
4. The Regulations - No Rights (from "Electric Guitar" CD on
Havoc Records)
5. Thee Vicars - Leavin' Here (from "...Let Us Play" 7" on
Dire Records)

6. Paul Baribeau - Christmas Lights (from "Grand Ledge" CD on
Plan-It-X Records)
7. Russ Substance - Sleep Forever (from the split CD with James Black entitled "As The Crow Flies" on
Plan-It-X Records)
8. Robert Blake - Didn't We ( a Jim Page cover from the split CD with Erik Petersen on
Art Of The Underground Records)
9. Bent Outta Shape - Villain (from the split 7" with Drunken Boat on
Salinas Records)

10. Shang-A-Lang - Summertime (from the "Summertime" 7" released by
Dirt Cult Records and Lets Pretend Records)

Somethings I should probably say:
1. I am pretty useless with computers. Sorry. This was put together on my family's PC using Audacity and a USB record player, some over played CDs and 7"s and a super cheap microphone (I got it for £4). Plus this MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if theres a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I think I did an ok job for a first crack but I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format. I hope that makes sense!
2. I either asked the bands (The Shitty Limits/Thee Vicars/Robert Blake/Regulations) or the record label who put out the record I was playing (Deranged/Left Off The Dial/Plan It X/Salinas/Dirt Cult) if it was ok to podcast their songs and they were cool with it. I think one of the great things about the Internet is that its really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers!
3. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it!
