Ten Songs Podcast #25a and #25b

I’m back in the UK now (bah) but my last house in Australia was in Highgate Hill, Brisbane. It was a big Queenslander with minimal holes in the floor and a good mix of house mates who passed like ships in the night but were all vaguely into punk and hardcore of some kind. In times gone by, I probably would have done some Aaron Cometbus inspired zine about the history of the house and all the kids who had lived there. But this is 2011 not 2003 and I’m a lot lazier than I used to be so instead I decided to make a podcast featuring sets chosen by each person who was living in the house at that time.

This show is in two parts cos its really long. The first half (Podcast 25a) features a set of indie/garage/lo-fi tunes from Wex along with Kieran’s set of more straight up hardcore. The second file, podcast 25b, features my set of the usual melodic punk/hardcore stuff and Simon’s set of post hardcore tunes. Please take the time to listen to both files, cos my ex-house mates all have rad taste in music and there’s a lot of gems in this show from bands I wasn’t really aware of. QLD 4101 motherfucker. – Phil Chokeword

Notes:
1. These podcasts were put together on a notepad PC using Audacity, some MP3’s and a shitty headset internet microphone. Professional I am not. Plus this MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if there’s a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format.
2. Where possible I got permission from either the bands or labels before putting this show together. It’s polite innit. Thanks to everyone who was kind enough to let us play a track from a record they released or by a band they played in. It’s well appreciated.
3. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it! Please? Thank you. And get in touch too if you dig it/hate it/have any tips. tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com or leave a comment.
4. After two years of really good, flexible service, I've had to leave blip.tv as they are winding down their support for audio only podcasts. This really sucks because the majority of you listen to the show via i-Tunes subscriptions. I am moving to Lib-syn and have been reassured by blip.tv that they will redirect any rss feeds to my new account. At the moment, the rss feeds are still with blip.tv and I'm slowly moving the other functions across. I don't think this will affect long term listeners except that you might notice cosmetic changes to the blog like a better flash player and that the option to save the podcast as an MP3 option works considerably quicker. I'll let you know if any unforeseen issues arise.

****Please note I had some initial issues uploading #25a to Blip.tv. These are now resolved. If you have any problems with downloading this file in iTunes, please post a comment and I'll resolve them as quickly as I can***

Get In The Van #2/Ten Songs Podcast #24

This show is a trans-world (?) split with Get In The Van Podcast, put together via the magic of the information superhighway across about 1000 billion miles and multiple time zones. Ben recorded his show in Leeds, UK and his half features a mix of mostly local punk/hardcore. It’s pretty ripping. Then you get to listen to me mumbling my way through the usual mix of punk, hardcore and garage tunes, all compiled in the comfort of my bedroom in Brisbane, Australia. Enjoy. – Phil Chokeword

2. That long overdue listener request set.

Thanks to Alex and everyone else who contributed to this show. I’m stoked on how it came out. So much so I’ve listened it three times today already.

- Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1. Billy Bragg & The Red Stars – Accident Waiting To Happen (From the “No Pop, No Style, Strictly Roots” bootleg –

Traffic Street Records)
3. Rumspringer – Sometimes Dead Is Better (From the “Empty Towers” CD on

Listener request set:

Lookout Records) Chosen by Jim Milliepeed

14. Shorebirds – Upside Down (From the “It’s Gonna Get Ugly” CD on
Rumbletowne Records)

Notes:
1. This was put together on my PC using Audacity and a USB record player, some over played CDs and 7"s and a cheap Internet microphone. Plus this MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if there’s a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format.
2. I asked the labels (It’s Alive, Recess, Rumbletowne), the bands (Transgressions, Rumspringer, Bratt Farrar, Scale Models) or Southern Lovin’ (Shaking Hands) if it was OK to podcast their songs and they were cool with it. I think one of the great things about the internet is that it’s really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers! I never heard back from Iron Chic, Narnack Records, Yo-Yo Records, OK Pilot and Billy Bragg. Google says that Sweet Baby don’t have a myspace and the Coachwhips have an inactive one (well, two actually). And I’m never quite sure what the deal is with Lookout! Records (are they still an active label?). I figured I’d play these tracks anyhow, in the interest of exposing people to cool tuneage. If anyone connected to the tracks where I couldn’t get permission has an issue with this, please email me and we’ll sort it out.
3. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it! Please? Thank you. And get in touch too if you dig it/hate it/have any tips. tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com or leave a comment. And if you think you might want to have a go at making your own podcast, here’s a step by step guide to How I Made This Show.

How To Listen To The Show:
I've uploaded the podcast to bliptv. I'm a little confused by RSS feeds and all that bumph, but I think that they sort all this for me. This means that it should be pretty easy to subscribe to the podcast. As I understand it, you need to cut and paste this url into your podcast catcher - http://tensongspodcast.blip.tv/rss - or if you use itunes, hopefully you'll be able to do the same thing if you CLICK HERE.

Uploading to blip.tv also means that you can use the player below to stream the podcast and listen to it without downloading it. Plus if you RIGHT CLICK HERE and select "save target as" you should have the option of downloading the podcast and listening to it on the sly at work or something. Get in. (If you left click, it streams the audio too, but it jumps to another page and takes forever.)

Ten Songs Podcast #22

Ok. This is meant to be the last show, but what the fuck. After a few months off, I’ve enjoyed putting it together so I recon they’ll be a few more when I get enough stuff to play. Anyhow this is a striped down Ten Songs. I’m back to the original format of just playing ten songs I think are great, partly because I like the idea of going back to basics, partly cos I’ve been spending money on things other than music and partly because my internet access has been too intermittent to until now to sort the request set I planned on including in this show. That’ll be in the next one. Until then, this is some tunes I’m stoked on and I hope you are too.
- Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1.RVIVR – Seethin’ (From the “Dirty Water” EP on
Rumbletowne Records)

2. Samiam – Regret (From the “Orphan Works” CD on
No Idea Records)
3. Bloody Hammer – Smash Them All (From the self released “Pogo Rock” demo –
Bloody Hammer blog)
4. One Reason – Dead End Roads (From the ”All Rivers Run South” CD on
Plan It X Records)
5. White Wires – Please Write (From the split 7” with Mean Jeans on
Dirtnap Records)

6. Bastad! Rats! – Miners Strike (From the “Underneath Are The Everlasting Arms” split CD with We Grow Beards – download from

9. Infinite Void – What’s Left (From the self released demo –
Infinite Void myspace)

10. RVIVR – Cut The Cord (From the self titled album on
Rumbletowne Records)
